My Project Journey

This experience had our team going round and round before we found a good product to bring to the check out station!

Problem Statement

" Elderly consumers desire to have more open interactions on a day to day basis, but often miss opportunities to combine errands with social events.
Project Goals

" Our team aims to create a sense of community with our shoppers as well as give incentive to get the best deal possible with our products.

01 DISCOVER

Primary + Secondary Research
Purpose: Narrow down target population and problem

First, we looked at who goes to the grocery store, from there we narrowed down the potential population we wanted to focus on to: children, college students, parents and senior citizens. Through research articles and interviews, we were able to narrow down what the problems were: navigation, interaction and speed/convenience.

02 IDEATE

Convenience and Navigation were interesting options as a problem since many types of users seem to struggle with it. We did not decide which user group we wanted to focus on yet so we ideated for all three: children, parents, and seniors.

Through this process, we were able to come up with many ideas that helped us realize that it was impossible to move forward without picking a specific user group to focus on since each population are very different from each other.

----- REFINEMENT -----

Picture
We realized that we needed to pick a target population so we chose the to explore more into the needs of senior citizens because we felt that they were a population that we felt more passionate about. We were also most interested in exploring the Flag Assistance idea which will look into ways to help senior citizens with mobility issues to feel more independent at the store.

The idea is that senior citizens on hoverounds will have the option to ask for assistance by raising up a flag that would notify an employee that they need assistance but will also allow for other customers to see that as well. This can encourage helpful and positive social behaviors at the store while also creating a sense of community.

03 RE-DISCOVER

For this solution, the user population is senior citizens with mobility problems and possibly individuals with disabilities. Through revisiting previously gathered data and new research, we were also reminded that one of the top 3 problems that senior citizens have in the grocery store is their ability to reach the products they need as well as the interview results which supports this issue. From there, we are now sure that we wanted to explore the reachability issues with senior citizens on wheelchairs/hoverounds.

We conducted more interviews to specifically highlight these issues.

04 IDEATE

01 Final Idea

We found that many senior citizens value social interactions they get in a grocery store, so we wanted to create something that would benefit the store as well as fulfill this need for the senior citizens. What we created is an interactive event system where users are able to participate in the store and also collect coupons/rewards from it.

Reflection

Due to many time factors, our final solution was not what we hoped that it would be. I think we found a unique issue to tackle but the way we handled it made it a missed opportunity.

However, I really enjoyed our process of identifying problems, shifting focus and solving problems that we encountered in this project.
